CEMETERY COYOTES

August 2022, Oceanside, CA

  • This corner of the cemetery is where two groundskeepers told me they see the coyotes (and nowhere else in recent weeks)

  • Big green area is very dense, lush, likely water. Doesn’t see like homeless people would be in here.

  • Green curves around cul-de-sac: lots of recent and old scat

  • Yellow curves: coyote trails, tons of rabbit droppings

  • Red dot: where I’ve been putting food (August 6-8), near trash can where there’s lots of scat

  • Light blue: where I saw tail-less coyote August 6, 9am. (I was there 8-9am) It may have continued to food, but a big noisy truck was approaching so it left.

  • No sighting August 7, 8:20am to 11am. I left three pieces of chicken and wet dog food. I returned at 7:30pm and all had been eaten except one chicken piece. Weird! Spooked? All gone next morning.

  • Magenta: where I saw male and female together August 8/8, 10:55am, looking for squirrels. Squirrels made very loud alarms, which got my attention and the coyotes were right there. One of them looked directly at me and did not seem bothered. They took their time leaving into the very dense scrub. I was there from 8:10am to 12:10pm. There was no activity from 8:10am to 9:50am. (A groundskeeper was working right in front of the mausoleum from 8:50 to 9:50, so no chance of a coyote approaching food.)

  • The building is the mausoleum. Occasional visitors and groundskeepers. Big trucks driving by all the time at the other end of the cul-de-sac.

  • Red spot: is feeding spot near trash can

  • Blue spot: where I’ve been watching from my truck.

  • Light green spot: could be a workable spot for a camera. Shady, a little shielded from noise and activity. The two coyotes got in here and looked for squirrels. There’s a tree and a bush a camera could be chained to (with 8'-foot long chain). It would be visible if anyone came over to look, but not immediately in view by anyone visiting. However, there’s no good or inconspicuous spot to watch the camera from, other than the blue area, which is quite close. My impression was that they were not alarmed by me being this close. They must see people close up all the time.
